Police and firefighters assist a man who had been hanging from the rail of the Park Avenue Bridge on Wednesday.

WATERLOO – Authorities talked a man off of the Park Avenue bridge as it appeared he was about to jump into the Cedar River Wednesday morning.

Police and firefighters were called to the bridge around 10 a.m. after witnesses noticed the unidentified man had climbed over the railing, according to officials. The downtown bridge spans the river just upstream from a low-head dam.

A crowd of children on a trip to the nearby RiverLoop splash park cheered when crews coaxed the man back to safety.

Paramedics with Waterloo Fire Rescue took him to a nearby hospital for an evaluation.
