INDEPENDENCE — The Independence Area Chamber of Commerce has announced an extension of the registration deadline to 1 p.m. Friday for entries in the 158th Annual Fourth of July Parade.

Parade information and entry forms are available in the Forms & Downloads section of the Chamber’s website, www.indeecommerce.com, at the Chamber office at 112 First St. E between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. through Friday, at the main branch of BankIowa in Independence, or at the meat department at the Independence Fareway. Entries may be accepted on the day of the event but will be assessed a $10 late fee.

The 158th Annual Fourth of July Parade will be held Wednesday beginning at 9 a.m. in downtown Independence. The parade theme is “Celebrate our Spirit,” a component of the community’s new marketing brand unveiled in March 2018 after a three-year development process.

Parade line-up begins at 6 a.m. on Fourth Avenue N.E. near St. John’s Catholic Church and the adjoining side streets. This year, awards will be given to winning parade entries in the following categories: Best Use of Theme, Best Float, Most Creative Entry, and People’s Choice Award.
