Court goes to Burlington
The Iowa Supreme Court will hear oral arguments Nov. 5 at Edward Stone Middle School auditorium in Burlington beginning at 7 p.m.
The court will hear lawyers argue in two cases: Palmer College of Chiropractic v. Davenport Civil Rights Commission and Aaron Cannon, and Joseph DeMocko, et al. vs. Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Iowa senate Democrats are accusing Republican Gov. Terry Branstad of continuing to violate the state’s contract with correctional officers at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison by improperly posting notice of job openings.
According to Sens. Tom Courtney or Burlington and Sen. Rich Taylor of Mount Pleasant, on Aug. 27 the Branstad administration posted notices of vacant positions in direct violation of the arbitrator’s earlier decision.
In prisons, they said in a joint statement, “sudden, unexpected changes in work assignments increase risks for everyone and for the general public.”
They called it Branstad’s “latest effort to undermine the rights of state employees.”
The arbitrator’s decision can be found on Iowa Senate's website.
