INDEPENDENCE — The Board of Education is starting the search for a new superintendent to replace Jean Peterson after the end of the school year.

“She is retiring, and she was kind enough to give her retirement announcement early,” said Laura Morine, finance director for Independence Community Schools. Peterson’s last day will be June 30.

The board recently heard presentations from several search firms and chose Grundmeyer Leader Search of Des Moines to guide its efforts. Morine said a community survey seeking qualities that residents would like to see in a new superintendent is expected to go out in the coming days. The survey will be available through the district’s web site, Facebook page and other online sources.

“We hope to hire our new superintendent probably at the Feb. 19 meeting or before,” said Morine.

Peterson has led the Independence district since 2010. It serves just under 1,400 kindergarten through 12th-grade students at East and West elementary schools and Independence Junior Senior High School.
