Cupcake eating record broken at competition

WATERLOO, Iowa --- Pat "Deepdish" Bertoletti of Chicago was crowned champion Saturday when he ate 72 cupcakes in under six minutes, setting a world record at the second annual World Cupcake Eating Championship sanctioned by Major League Eating.

The contest was hosted by Isle Casino Hotel Waterloo. Thirteen entrants ate a record number of cupcakes totaling nearly 700. The eaters demolished every cupcake prepared for the competition, changing the championship from a race to eat the most to a race to finish eating first.

The remaining four finishers tied for second place.

The final results:

1st place, $1,500: Pat Bertoletti, 72 cupcakes.

2nd place, $1,000: Aaron "A-train" Osthoff, Dubuque, 66 cupcakes.

2nd place, $1,000: Tim "Eater X" Janus, New York, N.Y., 66 cupcakes.

2nd place, $1,000: Badlands Booker, New York, N.Y., 60 cupcakes.

2nd place, $1,000: Bob "Notorious B.O.B." Shoudt, Royersford, Pa., 54 cupcakes.

Local celebrities Jared Aarons, sports director at KGAN, and Danielle Wagner, weekend anchor/reporter at KWWL, also went head to head eating cupcakes for the charities of their choice.

Aarons ate on behalf of Yet Livnot and Wagner ate on behalf of the Cedar Bend Humane Society.

Aarons came out victorious eating 10 cupcakes earning $1,000 for Yet Livnot. Wagner came in second eating seven cupcakes earning $700 for the Cedar Bend Humane Society.
