WATERLOO – A 72-year-old man is in the hospital with a broken neck after he was beaten and clubbed with a child’s bicycle Wednesday morning.

Waterloo police arrested the alleged attacker, Martavis Tayshon Wise, 27, of 614 Keystone St., for willful injury causing serious injury. He was taken to the Black Hawk Count Jail, and bond was set at $100,000.

The reason for the attack wasn’t immediately available, but police said the victim, Johannes Rodenburgh, was a maintenance worker at the apartment complex where Wise’s girlfriend lived.

According to court records, Wise kicked in the door to his girlfriend’s apartment at 1236 W. Mullan Ave. and entered around 10 a.m. Wednesday. Rodenburgh walked over to the apartment and exchanged words with Wise, and Wise lunged at Rodenburgh, punching in the head and body until the maintenance worker fell to the ground, record state.

Wise continued the attack, punching and kicking Rodenburgh while he was down, records state. Wise then picked up a child’s bike from the grass nearby and slammed the bike down on Rodenburgh, records state.

Witnesses called police and paramedics, who found Rodenburgh semi conscious. He was taken to Covenant Medical Center where he underwent surgery for a broken neck, said Maj. Joe Leibold with the Waterloo Police Department. He remained hospitalized as of Thursday morning.
