CEDAR FALLS – Two people have been arrested for allegedly passing counterfeit money at stores in Cedar Falls and Waterloo in October.

Joshua Lee Johnson, 32, and Misty Dawn Wittren, 33, of 1049 Dundee Ave., Waterloo, were arrested for forgery.

According to police, counterfeit $1 bills with the same serial number were used to buy items at the Cedar Falls Wal-Mart on Oct. 16, and someone had attempted to use a counterfeit $20 bill at New Star Mart on Ansborough Avenue. When the New Star clerk questioned the bill, and the people who tried to use it left the store, court records state.

A counterfeit $1 bill with the same serial number as the Wal-Mart notes was used at the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Waterloo office on Oct. 20.

In November, Black Hawk County sheriff’s deputies stopped a vehicle carrying Johnson and Wittren, and authorities found a backpack containing a large amount of fake $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills, court records state.
