CRESCO – Two Cresco residents have been arrested for allegedly trying to pass canceled checks.
Fayette County sheriff’s deputies arrested Billie Jean Hageman, 18, and Charles William Evans, 43, on Wednesday for conspiracy to commit third-degree theft. Evans was later released on bond.
According to court records, Evans had received a check for $789 and later told the person who wrote the check that he lost it. The check writer arranged to have a replacement check made and cancelled the first check. Evans allegedly attempted to cash the first check at a bank in West Union, but bank employees wouldn’t cash the check.
