Parents plead not guilty in Alta Vista child death

Trial date set for father in child death case

ALTA VISTA – Trial has been set for January for a former Alta Vista man accused of killing his infant son.

Trial for Zachary Paul Koehn, 28, has been tentatively scheduled for Jan. 3 in Chickasaw County District Court in New Hampton.

Koehn is charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment causing death. Also charged is the child’s mother, 20-year-old Cheyanne Renae Harris. A trial date hasn’t been set in her case.

Koehn and Harris were arrested in October in connection with the death of 4-month-old Sterling Koehn. Authorities said they found the child dead in a child swing when they were called to the family’s Alta Vista apartment on Aug. 30. Maggots found on the child and the child’s clothing indicated he had been changed, bathed or moved from the swing in at least a week, which contradicted the parents’ account of what happened with the child.

Both parents have pleaded not guilty to the charges and demanded speedy trials.
