WATERLOO | A Waterloo teen has been arrested in connection with an early December shooting that sent one person to the hospital.

Waterloo police took Raymond Duke Birden, 17, of 101 Reed St., into custody on Wednesday for intimidation with a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm. He was taken to the Black Hawk County Jail and bond was set at $15,000.

According to court records, residents reported hearing gunfire in the area of West Second and Allen streets around 11:15 a.m. on Dec. 4, and police found spent shell casings and blood in the roadway.

A short time later, the 22-year-old Donald Harris of Waterloo arrived at Covenant Medical Center by private vehicle. 

Witnesses told police they saw Birden climb out of a vehicle and approach Harris. He then pulled a gun from his coat pocket and shot Harris, court records state. When the victim ran, Birden fired a few more times in his direction, records state.

Birden has a prior arrest on firearms charges after officer found a .45-caliber handgun hidden in a couch in February.
