WATERLOO — A Ridgeway man was found guilty of pleasuring himself in a Waterloo convenience store parking lot despite a doctor’s testimony the man had a medical need.

An off-duty officer working security said he found Alan Wallace Blekeberg, 54, masturbating in car parked outside Casey’s General Store on Logan Avenue for an extended amount of time. The incident was captured on the officer’s body camera.

The encounter came during an Aug. 19, 2016, trip to Waterloo where Blekeberg apparently dropped of a family member and then stopped at a strip club before parking at the 24-hour store, according to testimony.

During trial on Wednesday, Blekeberg’s physician, Dr. Daniel Wientzen of Decorah, testified he had been treating Blekeberg since July 2015 for anxiety and that medication and a medical dysfunction resulted in a buildup in pressure in his groin area that causes pain.

“There is really only one way to alleviate that, that is through ejaculation,” Wientzen told jurors.

Assistant County Attorney Michael Hudson asked the doctor if the best way to avoid the pain and discomfort was to avoid situations that cause arousal.

Wientzen responded it wasn’t plausible because it can be impossible for adult males to avoid arousal.

Blekeberg didn’t take the stand at trial.

Jurors deliberated most of Thursday — at one point submitting a note to the court that they were deadlocked — before reaching a verdict finding Blekeberg guilty of indecent exposure, a misdemeanor. Sentencing will be at a later date, and the charge carries a maximum of one year in jail.
