WATERLOO -- A Janesville woman who turned in a number of winning scratch-off lotto tickets has been arrested for allegedly stealing the tickets during a break-in.
Stephany Rae Hewitt, 28, was arrested Jan. 24 for 12 counts of lottery theft and one count of third-degree burglary. She remains in the Black Hawk County Jail with bond set at $33,000.
Authorities allege that Hewitt broke into the Prime Mart, 3535 Marigold Drive, around 4:20 a.m. on Nov. 13 and took 24 lottery tickets. She then redeemed the winning Joker Jackpot, Cash Connect, Cash Lift, Riches, Dough Away Zone tickets 43 minutes later, court records state.
Survellance videos show that Hewitt was wearing the same clothing from the burglary when she turned in the winning tickets.
Hewitt was also arrested for allegedly taking a lottery ticket from Casey's General Store on Main Street in Cedar Falls on Oct. 15 and is charged in an Oct. 19 case where a friend, Nicholas Schwartz of Iowa Falls, allegedly took a lottery ticket from Crossroads BP on Mitchell Avenue, court records state.
In that case, Schwartz allegedly selected a Shiny and Bright ticket from the store and before paying, asked the clerk to check other tickets he brought with him to see if they were winners. While the employee was checking, Schwartz allegedly pocketed the new lottery ticket and then said he had to retrieve his wallet from his vehicle. Schwartz left, and Hewitt allegedly cashed the stolen ticket at another store about 15 minutes later, records state.
Schwartz also allegedly used the same ploy at Casey's General Store on Ranchero Road on Oct. 20, according to court records. He was arrested in November.
