HAWKEYE – A Hawkeye man has been indicted on gun charges after a rifle was found in his vehicle when it was seized by a bank in September.

Mark Shannon Opperman, 42, appeared in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids on Friday and pleaded not guilty to one count of felon in possession of a firearm. Trial has been scheduled for March.

Authorities said Opperman is prohibited from possessing firearms because of a 2004 meth lab conviction.

According to court records, a bank impounded Opperman’s vehicle on Sept. 22, and a .22-caliber Winchester Model 190 rifle was found in the vehicle, court records state.

The meth charge stemmed from a June 2004 incident where authorities found a lab at a home on 170th Street near Sumner.
