WATERLOO – An Evansdale man has been arrested in connection with a Friday night chase after he allegedly ran from the vehicle, leaving behind a key chain with his name.
Charles Joseph Barfels, 38, of 619 Home Acres, was arrested Monday at his home on charges of eluding. He was also arrested for possession of meth and marijuana with intent to deliver in connection with a December incident.
Bond was set at $63,000.
According to police, officers started following a Buick while responding to a report of gunfire in the area of West Fourth and Wellington streets in Waterloo around 9:45 p.m. Friday. Police attempted to stop the Buick, which took off, going more than 50 mph in a 25 mph zone and running stop signs before parking at West Second Street and Western Avenue where the driver ran off.
Inside the vehicle, police found a set of house keys on a key chain embroidered with the name “Charles,” and witnesses identified Barfels as being connected with the Buick, records state.
The car apparently had no connection to the gunfire, police said.
In December, police contacted Barfels at his home in connection with outstanding warrants. He ran, and police found about 27 grams of meth and $5,000 in cash when they caught him. He wasn’t arrested at that time.
