About 1,000 runners took off early Saturday, June 14, 2014, for the fifth annual Alive & Running 5K in Dunkerton. The event returns this weekend.

DUNKERTON — Registration is now open for the 2018 Alive & Running 5K Run/Walk on June 16.

The event, which raises awareness and funds for suicide prevention, will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Dunkerton Gospel Hall, 301 Carroll Blvd. Cost is $15 for the event and a short-sleeve T-shirt or $20 for the event and a long-sleeved T-shirt through midnight June 2. Beginning June 3, registration will be $25, and a shirt will not be guaranteed.

A remembrance ceremony will begin at dusk June 15 outside the Dunkerton school. Luminary bags for the ceremony can be purchased for $5 on the event registration website.

Proceeds from the event will benefit two area support groups, an Alive & Running scholarship, resources for local mental health facilities and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. According to the AFSP, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, claiming nearly 45,000 Americans every year.

Alive and Running was founded in 2010 by Belmer and Ryan Nesbit to honor their friend and Dunkerton classmate, Rodger Dos, who took his own life when he was 15.

The Runner’s Flat gift cards will be awarded to the winners in each of the 11 divisions and to the first through third overall male and female racers. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division.
