DES MOINES (AP) - Federal officials say the cost of an immigration raid at a kosher slaughterhouse in northeastern Iowa this spring has topped $5 million.
The May 12 raid at Agriprocessors Inc. in Postville was one of the largest in U.S. history.
Officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement released figures after a freedom of information request by The Des Moines Register. As of Aug. 21, officials said their expenditures totaled $5,211,092.
That's $13,396 for each of the 389 illegal immigrants taken into custody.
However, the newspaper says the information provided to it wasn't complete.
It says a U.S. Department of Labor spokesman declined to provide information about that agency's costs, and the U.S. attorney's office in Cedar Rapids did not respond its requests.
