EVANSDALE - Residents of an Exceptional Persons Inc. house were relocated after a fire gutted half their home Wednesday afternoon.
No injuries were reported, said J.T. Picha, the city's fire chief. A cause wasn't immediately available.
In addition to Evansdale's fire department, crews were called in to assist from Waterloo, Raymond and Gilbertville.
Jennifer Theel said she drove by the house at about 2 p.m. when she spotted smoke coming from 88 Eldene Court.
She went to get a closer look and discovered the smoke was coming from the house and called 911. About that time two Evansdale police officers pulled up, and all three entered through an unlocked back door.
"We ran through and knocked on the (interior) doors and stuff," Theel said. She said no one was inside.
Keeley Shelton, a support staff worker for EPI, said the building houses 11 residents who were away at jobs and day programming, which is part of the daily routine.
The residents were moved to other EPI houses, she said.
"They have somewhere to go," Shelton said.
