There’s nothing less appetizing than opening your refrigerator door and being hit with a sour, strange, or rotten smell. But finding the culprit behind the offending odor isn’t always easy. If your fridge smells funky, check these common causes.

1) You forgot about that moldy cheese in the back.

Rotten food is the most common cause of funky fridge odors. Find the offending item by thoroughly cleaning out your refrigerator, checking expiration dates, and disposing of any food that’s gone bad.

2) Your fridge needs a bath.

Sometimes offending odors aren’t caused by forgotten food, but they may be caused by infrequently wiping down the inside of your refrigerator. Small spills of milk, creamer, or soups can build up into a smelly situation over time. Wipe down the shelves with a natural all-purpose cleaner and take out the produce drawers and wash them in the sink.

3) You need some extra help from odor eliminators.

Sometimes your refrigerator smells funky from fresh food like garlic, onions, and fish. Using a natural deodorizer like baking soda or activated charcoal can help keep odors in check.

4) Your drip pan is dirty.

If you’ve cleaned out the inside of your refrigerator but still notice a strange smell, the culprit might be your drip pan. This pan is located under the fridge and is accessible from the front or back depending on the model. If the odor persists, pull it out, wash with warm water and soap, and replace it.
