INDEPENDENCE — Dr. Sushil K. Upadhyay, 77, of Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 3, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
He was born July 13, 1940, in Manasa, Madhya Pradesh (MP), India, son of Parmanand and Kanchan Ojha Upadhyay. On June 20, 1967, he married Nirmala (Nina) Devi Sharma in Ajmer, Rajasthan, India.
He attended medical school in India and did his medical residency in the United States. He had a family medical practice for nine years in India and then moved to the United States in 1978. Dr. Upadhyay has been a psychiatrist at the Mental Health Institute in Independence since 1986.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, Nitin (Amita) of Jaipur, India, and Ashish of Independence; three daughters, Anupama Upadhyay of Chicago, Nita Kumar of Minneapolis and Aksha Upadhyay of Independence; two grandchildren, Akash Kumar and Aryan Upadhyay; and two brothers, Anil (Chitra) and Mahesh (Sneh), both of India.
Preceded in death by: his parents; and a brother, Ramesh (Deepa).
Services: The family will hold a time of visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Dec. 5, at White Funeral Home, Independence.
