CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- Scheels All Sports is closing its current stores in Cedar Falls and Waterloo to consolidate its operations under one roof in a new building in Viking Plaza in Cedar Falls.
The move is planned for March 2013, Scheels officials said Monday.
The Fargo, N.D.-based sporting goods retailer says its current locations at Crossroads Center in Waterloo and College Square Mall in Cedar Falls don't serve its evolving needs, said Jason Loney, vice president of store development.
"We need more space," Loney said. "We will expand the products we have and we'll bring all of our current employees under one roof."
The new store, which the company will build and own, as is common with its newer stores, will be about 100,000 square feet, compared to the 48,000 and 16,000 square feet that it leases from College Square and Crossroads, respectively.
All 82 College Square and 40 Waterloo employees will move to the new store, Loney said, adding that additional help might be needed.
"It's a bit early to know that now," he said.
The new store will be more in line with some of Scheels' newer buildings, Loney said, adding that its unit in Reno, Nev., is 295,000-square feet.
Scheels has 23 stores in eight states.
The new store will have room for more interaction with customers, Loney said.
"There's lots of opportunities for entertainment pieces like an archery shooting lane," he said. "It also gives us the opportunity to do some things with the customers we haven't been able to do before. We'll have training facilities for seminars, as an example."
Calls to Crossroads and College Square officials for comment were not immediately returned.
