CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- A walking moai launch will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. June 24 at Overman Park, across from Cedar Falls City Hall at 220 Clay St.
Walking moais are groups of up to 10 people who meet at least once a week to walk. The effort is part of the Blue Zones Project, an initiative to make healthy choices easier.
According to the Blue Zones website, the small size allows members to focus on building strong friendships, which are as vital to well-being as exercise. Finding a social circle, or moai, of friends who possess positive traits "will do more to add years to your life than just about anything else," the site states.
The community is invited to join or create a walking team, or walk with an existing team. Blue Zones Project representatives will be available to help people sign up for teams and help existing teams track the amount of time they have walked. The goal is to see which team can track the most time walking together.

Free games, prizes and a bouncy house also are planned so parents can walk while kids play in a safe environment. Games are sponsored by the YMCA of Black Hawk County.
