Agency on Aging receives Blue Zones designation

WATERLOO — Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging has received its designations as a Blue Zones Worksite.

The Blue Zones project is designed to inspire, encourage, and promote actions and lifestyles to create a healthier work environment and community. The worksite designation uses measurements and rewards organizations for establishing and making strides towards a variety of initiatives.

“We have prided ourselves on working with the older individuals we serve to help ensure they have healthy options to remain as independent as possible, but going through this designation process was an important reminder that we also need to offer these options for our employees as well,” said HVAAA Associate Director Bob Schaffer.

To become designated, Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging established an employee committee to work through the designation process. Employees completed a survey to determine what areas to focus on for a new worksite wellness initiative.

“Giving our staff a voice in deciding how we move forward with our worksite wellness program was a vital part of giving everyone ownership in our program and generating excitement in making healthy changes,” said Schaffer.

The announcement was made at an April 4 staff meeting geared toward Blue Zones related topics such as nutrition information, stress reduction, healthy gardening and moving naturally to get exercise.
