• Iowa State has added Princeton graduate transfer Hans Brase to its men's basketball team.

A 6-foot-9 forward from Clover, S.C., has played just five games since the end of the 2014-15 season after suffering a pair of knee injuries. He averaged 11.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in 2014-15 and also has international experience playing for Germany's national teams.


  • The 23rd annual Robert J. Ganahl golf outing is Wednesday at Gates Park Golf Course, beginning with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

The four-person best-shot is in memory of Ganahl, a longtime bowler, tournament director and dedicated volunteer for the Waterloo Bowling Association. Cost is $65.

  • The annual Greater Cedar Valley Bowling Association banquet and annual meeting will take place Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the UAW Hall in Waterloo. The agenda includes election of directors and delegates for the coming season.

The annual GDV Youth bowling banquet is Friday at Cadillac Lanes. Tournament champions, scholarship winners and all-star teams will be honored. An adult/youth blind doubles tournament will follow.

  • University of Northern Iowa senior catcher Anna Varriano has been named to the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete first team.

Varriano carries a cumulative grade-point average of 3.57 with a major in communication disorders. She earned MVC Defensive Player of the Year honors and was second-team all-conference this past season.
