Luther's Huber awarded NCAA scholarship
Luther College All-American outfielder Shari Huber has been awarded a National Collegiate Athletic Association postgraduate scholarship.
The NCAA awarded one-time, non-renewable educational grants of $7,500 to 58 student-athletes who competed in spring sports.
Huber, a exercise science major, graduated summa cum laude with a 3.95 grade-point average. She will attend graduate school at the University of Iowa to attain a doctor of physical therapy degree.
During her four years in a Norse uniform, she was a 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association third-team All-American and twice a first-team all-Iowa Conference and all-Midwest Region selection.
Huber’s career batting average of .399 sits atop Luther’s all-time list. She also ranks first for career hits (206) and runs scored (167), while her 35 doubles and 79 walks both rank third.
Anderson candidate for NCAA Woman of the Year
Former Walnut Ridge (Waterloo Christian) standout Heidi Anderson of the University of Northwestern in St. Paul, Minn., has been chosen as the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference’s nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year.
Anderson, who graduated in the spring, was a three-time all-conference performer on the soccer pitch and was the league’s Co-Defender of the Year in 2012. In the classroom, she was academic all-conference all four years and compiled a 3.97 grade-point average.
In addition, Anderson has been heavily involved in campus and community service.
Dreyer takes Central College media relations job
Cedar Falls’ Jacob Dreyer is returning to Central College as assistant sports information director.
A 2011 Central graduate, Dreyer was a student sports information assistant for four years as an undergraduate. For the past two years, Dreyer was a graduate assistant in the sports information office at South Dakota State University, where he served as the primary contact for eight sports.
East planning reunion of 1982-83 wrestling champs
Waterloo East’s 1982-83 wrestling team will hold a 30-year reunion at a date to be determined.
The Trojans won a state championship three decades ago. It is the last East wrestling team to win the title.
