PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Youngstown scored 2 minutes, 33 seconds into overtime to deal Waterloo a 5-4 exhibition defeat Wednesday in the United States Hockey League’s Fall Classic.
The Phantoms broke on top 1-0 on a shorthanded goal in the opening period. Waterloo took a 2-1 lead early in the second period on scores by Ben Copeland and Matt Koopman — both with assists from Jack Drury — but Youngstown squared it at 2-2 heading into the third.
The Black Hawks took a two-goal lead when Drury and James Marooney connected at the 10:59 and 14:47 marks of the third, but couldn’t hold it.
Zach Metsa pulled the Phantoms within a goal at the 15:33 mark, and Max Ellis sent it to overtime at the final buzzer after Youngstown pulled its goalie for an extra skater. Metsa then won it in the overtime period. Matej Tomek took the loss in goal for Waterloo, stopping 22 of the 27 shots he faced.
The Black Hawks are scheduled to face Chicago Thursday at 4 p.m.
