CEDAR RAPIDS — Nathan Smith registered a hat trick as Cedar Rapids handed the Waterloo Black Hawks their first United States Hockey League preseason loss, 5-2 Saturday.

Smith scored once in each period for the RoughRiders.

Waterloo (3-1-0) opened the scoring when Hank Sorensen scored just 25 seconds into the contest on assists from Jack Drury and Matt Koopman.

Smith tied it with 14:04 left in the first, and then Marek Valach scored with 11:03 remaining. Smith made it 3-1 Cedar Rapids just 5:50 into the second, before Ian Malcolmson, on an assist from Dylan Mills, cut the Black Hawks’ deficit to 3-2 with 1:08 left in the middle period.

However, Smith completed his hat trick with 14:34 left in the third, and Jakub Urbanek scored into an empty net with 1:02 left.

Waterloo’s preseason schedule continues Thursday at the USHL Fall Classic in Pittsburgh, Pa., against Youngstown at 6 p.m.
