WATERLOO — The fans were left speechless at Young Arena Saturday night as the Madison Capitols scored five unanswered goals in the third period, sending the Waterloo Black Hawks to their third straight home loss of the young United States Hockey League season.
The Black Hawks had taken a 1-0 lead early in the opening frame and held that advantage up to the opening minute of the final period. That’s when the Capitols went on their wild run to claim a 5-1 victory.
Jackson Cates brought hope to the local faithful early as he found an open net staring him down after Caps goalie Dryden McKay came out to make a save on Ben Copeland.
Michael Ferrandino snagged the rebound and threw the puck at Cates, who was skating free in front of the crease and slapped it into an unprotected net.
The Hawks (4-3-0) seemed to dominate the offensive end as they put 50 shots toward McKay in the game, but he was up to the challenge, knocking all but one away.
On the other side of the ice, the Capitols poked a hole in the Hawks’ defense at the 1:27 mark of the third period, tying the contest and changing the momentum of the game.
Waterloo had an opportunity to grab the lead back, but an offensive charge fizzled and the Capitols went the other way and cashed in with a soft goal for a 2-1 lead.
Three minutes later, the Caps (3-4-0) began to pull away with a flick of the stick by Alexander Broetzman, who hit the back of the net for a 3-1 edge.
The Capitols tacked on a pair of goals late, including an empty netter, to keep the Black Hawks winless at home this season.
