WATERLOO — Lincoln jumped to a 3-0 advantage early against the Waterloo Black Hawks and rode that wave to an 8-5 United States Hockey League win Saturday night at Young Arena.

Down 3-0, the Black Hawks (26-13-3-1) erased the goose egg on the board with Jackson Cates rattling the nylon with just over one minute remaining in the opening period.

The Black Hawks’ second goal came from a nice feed off Garrett Wait’s stick as he dished the puck to a wide open Cates in front of the net, who then sent a blast to the back of the net to cut Waterloo’s deficit to 4-2.

Lincoln tallied another quick goal, putting the Hawks down by three once again.

Ben Copeland gave the fans at Young Arena something to cheer about as he took a pass from Cates and went one-on-one with Stars netminder Tomas Womacka, parking his shot glove side, and the Hawks were back to within a pair of goals heading into the third period.

However, on this night the Stars seemed to have an answer for everything as they built their lead back to three early in the final frame.

To add insult to injury, the Black Hawks were called for back-to-back penalties halfway through the period, forcing a challenging 5-on-3 penalty kill.

Hawks goalie Matej Tomek was up to the task as he made a point-blank save with his glove.

That seemed to spark the Waterloo offense. Cates completed his hat trick during the shorthanded situation, then Garrett Wait tacked on a feed from Jack Drury. Suddenly the Black Hawks Hawks were back in it, 6-5, with three minutes remaining in the contest.

The Stars countered, however, as they had all night, with a pair of goals with the final one going into an empty net.

The Black Hawks will try to rebound Tuesday night when they host rival Sioux City at 7:05 p.m.
