DUBUQUE — Dubuque ambushed Waterloo late in the third period, and scored 22 seconds into overtime with Quinn Preston’s second goal leading to a 3-2 victory Friday night during United States Hockey League action at Mystique Ice Center.

Fargo tied Waterloo atop the Western Conference standings after the Black Hawks (31-14-5-2) saw their two-goal lead evaporate over the final four minutes of regulation.

Waterloo tallied first late in the opening period on Jackson Cates’ goal off a Ben Copeland assist. Sam Huff then found Jack Drury, who lit the lamp for the Black Hawks midway into the second stanza.

Dubuque (23-20-7-2) didn’t score its first goal until Preston found the net 16 minutes, 17 seconds into the third period. A Fighting Saints team that was unable to convert its first three power-play chances against Waterloo’s penalty kill, finally took advantage its fourth power-play when Tyce Thompson tallied an equalizer 18:22 into the third period.

Preston scored the game-winner off an assist from Josh Maniscalco and Brendan Bushy on the only shot of overtime.

Waterloo finished with a 25-22 advantage in shots with goalie Matej Tomek recording 19 saves. Cole Weaver stopped 23 shots in net for Dubuque.
