MADISON, Wis. — Waterloo got the help it needed from Muskegon, then took care of its own business Friday night to keep the coveted Anderson Cup within reach.

Team USA needed only to win Friday in its regular-season finale to secure the Cup, but Muskegon came away with a 5-4 win to keep the door ajar for the Black Hawks.

Waterloo (37-14-6-2, 82 points) then blitzed Madison 5-1 to pull within a point of Team USA (41-18-0-1, 83 points) in the chase for the trophy that goes to the United States Hockey League’s regular-season champion.

The Black Hawks gave themselves a chance to claim the Cup Saturday night when they hosted Des Moines at 7:05 p.m. inside Young Arena.

Friday’s win gave Waterloo a 9-0-2 record in its last 11 games.

Ben Finkelstein staked the Black Hawks to a 1-0 lead just 3 minutes, 10 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal, then assisted on Jack Drury’s tally at the 7:01 mark of the first. Mason Palmer also had a hand in that goal.

Ethan Johnson made it 3-0 3:22 into the second with assists from Finkelstein and Colin Schmidt. That started a three-goal second period that included a solo score from Ben Copeland at 18:05 and an Evan Dougherty goal on assists from Joey Cassetti and Palmer just 21 seconds later.

Jared Moe was solid in goal with 19 saves for Waterloo, which racked up a 44-20 advantage in shots on goal.
