Waterloo Black Hawks second-year forward Ethan Johnson was named United States Hockey League Forward of the Week Monday.

Johnson, a Nebraska-Omaha commit, had a hand in five of Waterloo’s eight goals during weekend wins over Sioux City and Sioux Falls.

In Friday’s 4-1 victory at Sioux City, he had two assists and his first goal of the season. Saturday, during a 4-2 win at Sioux Falls, he assisted on the tying goal, then scored the go-ahead goal 18 seconds later.

The Waterloo Black Hawks’ third annual Battle the Black Hawks bowling event is Sunday, Nov. 19 at Maple Lanes Bowling Center in Waterloo.

From noon to 2 p.m., participants square off against the Black Hawks on the lanes with a chance to win prizes. Cost, including shoe rental, is $15 for adults or $10 for ages 18 and under. Proceeds benefit Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity.

Fans can register at the Black Hawks’ office at Young Arena, at the fan service table on game nights, the Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity office at 803 W. 5th St. in Waterloo or at Maple Lanes the morning of Nov. 10, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Wrestling

University of Northern Iowa wrestler Max Thomsen has been invited to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic set for 2 pm. Nov. 5 in Princeton, New Jersey.

Only 20 collegiate male wrestlers will be competing, and Thomsen will join UNI teammate Drew Foster as the first Panther wrestlers invited to the event since 2004. There is also a women’s division.

“It has always been a dream,” said Thomsen. “I have seen a lot of great wrestlers compete in this, and I’m excited I get this opportunity.”

Thomsen will wrestle Princeton’s Matt Kolodzik, who was seventh at 141 pounds at last year’s NCAA Championships. Foster will square off against three-time NCAA qualifier and 2016 All-American Pete Renda of North Carolina State.

Dan Gable will be holding an autograph session Sunday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 at the UNI-Dome in conjunction with the USA Wrestling’s Preseason Nationals.

In addition, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo will be open Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 a.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Wartburg College’s annual Pre-season Wrestling Fight Night will be Nov. 1 at Joe’s KnightHawk in Waverly.

Social begins at 5 p.m., with the high school panel at 7 and college panel featuring coaches from Wartburg, Grand View, Iowa, Iowa State and UNI.

Football

Luther College will host its fourth annual Military Appreciation Day during its Nov. 4 home matchup with Central College. All veterans and current military personnel, as well as their families, can get into the game free of charge. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
