DIKE — Top-ranked Don Bosco of Gilbertville literally and figuratively flexed its muscle Saturday at a Class 1A sectional wrestling tournament.
The Dons recorded 21 falls and two major decisions while racking up 305 points and advancing 13 wrestlers — 10 champions — to next Saturday’s district tournament at Jesup. It was Don Bosco’s 40th sectional championship in the past 42 years.
It has been five years since the Dons won their 10th traditional team title, and Don Bosco knows racking up bonus points like it did Saturday will go a long way toward ending that dry spell.
“I don’t know if we have ever gotten 13 to districts, and when you take a number like that to districts you can’t be disappointed,” Don Bosco head coach Tom Hogan said. “We had a couple of matches in the finals that we let slip away from us, but we did a good job in the wrestlebacks and got the job done there.
“We scored over 300 points, so that is a pretty good team effort.”
East Buchanan was second to Don Bosco’s 305 points with 171.5.
The Dons’ champions were Daniel Kimball (106), Michael McCelland (113), Cael Frost (120), Easton Larson (126), Max Wettengel (132), Gable Fox (138), Cael Rahnavardi (145), Logan Lutgen (152), Austin Hellman (160) and Thomas Evan (170). Eight of those titles were by fall.
“We know in Des Moines and next weekend, and our (state) duals on Tuesday, those type of bonus wins are huge, especially when you are chasing championships,” Hogan said.
Bryce Schares (182), Wyatt Sawvel (195) and Austin Svoboda (220) all advanced as runner-ups.
“We really came here hoping to get all 14 through,” said Fox, the Northern Iowa recruit and top-ranked 1A wrestler at 138 pounds. “We all battled hard and did our jobs and team points piled up. Bonus points are huge and one of our goals every time we wrestle.”
Fox was wrestling with his right elbow heavily taped and it appeared he was limited with its use Saturday. He admitted to hyper-extending it in practice on Friday, but said with rest it should be fine down the road.
“It feels good. I feel like it will be better next week,” Fox said. “It should be all good by state.”
Jesup’s Brian Sadler, the top-ranked heavyweight in 1A who committed to walk on to the Iowa football team earlier this week, rolled through his bracket, including a 1 minute, 34 second pin of Chase Arends of Dike-New Hartford in the finals.
“I’ve just got to keep taking it one match at a time and not overlook anybody,” said Sadler, who reached last year’s state semifinals before finishing third. “I’ve improved a ton. I take a lot more shots, varied my attacks and that is hard for a lot of heavyweights to handle.”
Hudson had three wrestlers advances, including sectional champions Wes Geisler at 195 and Cam Fulcher at 220. Ethan Fulcher at 160 also moved on.
Geisler pinned Sawvel of Don Bosco in the finals in 1:10, while Fulcher flattened the Dons’ Svoboda in 1:57 to win at 220.
East Buchanan had a champion at 182 where Heath Weber topped Schares, 8-1, in the finals.
Don Bosco and East Buchanan earn berths in Tuesday’s 1A regional dual championships.
