CEDAR FALLS — Neither wind nor rain nor sleet nor snow could keep some girls’ high school track and field teams from attending the A.D. Dickinson Relays Monday at the UNI-Dome.

With nasty weather prevailing throughout the day and many schools closing, there were only 10 no-shows for the big event.

“I was a little shocked that it wasn’t cancelled when I saw the schools that were reporting in that were not going to show up,” Cedar Falls coach Kara Bearbower said. “We showed up and the show was going on so you just have to get yourselves ready to go.”

Waterloo East’s Alanna Muhammad was ready, despite coming off illness that hampered her training. She tied for second in the long jump at 16 feet, 9 inches and took third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.04 seconds.

“I thought as a team we would do pretty good today,” Muhammad said. “I actually did better than I thought I would, because I have not been feeling well.

“There was a lot going on before my race and I had to get ready quick. As a team, though, in my head I believe we are the best team here. We are doing so well.”

That positive attitude keeps Trojans coach Richard Carter smiling.

“Not a bad night,” Carter said. “And when you hear things like that from Alanna, it makes you smile. I love their attitude and their drive.”

Cedar Falls’ Mackenzie Michael placed third in the 1,500.

“Like we always have, we just use this meet as a way to get different girls on the track,” Bearbower said. “We have 112 athletes and we have to get them time in and the experience.

“I don’t have a full squad here, because half of them are gone this week. But those that were gone will compete next week. We just need to see if we have any diamonds in the rough and build on the little things. That is only going to make us stronger.”

The Tigers crossed the tape in fourth place during the last event of the night, the 4x400.

“We are not really in shape yet,” declared Bearbower. “We need to work on getting in shape.”
