A pair of metro tennis teams opened dual play Tuesday with identical 8-1 victories.

Waterloo West’s boys defeated Mississippi Valley Conference foe Dubuque Senior, and the four-time defending Class 1A state champion Waterloo Columbus girls handed Waverly-Shell Rock its 2017 first loss in four duals.

At Waverly, a strong Waverly-Shell Rock boys’ team defeated Columbus, 9-0. West’s girls suffered an 8-1 home loss to Dubuque Senior.

West’s boys picked up straight-set singles victories over Senior from Dane Hurst, Parker McNally, Nick Ritland and Andrew Christensen. Zach Heyerhoff rallied from a set down to give the Wahawks a fifth singles victory as he edged Senior’s Josh Huseman in a match tiebreak, 6-7, 6-4, 10-6.

Jack Schaefer joined West’s singles winners to sweep doubles play in straight sets.

Defending state singles champion Olivia Fain defeated Chelsea Poesch, a 2016 third-place state finisher, 6-1, 6-2 to highlight Columbus’ win over Waverly-Shell Rock. Lauren McManus, Franny Roche, Karlee Sinnott and Brianne Eighme added straight-set singles victories, and Anna Sinnott completed a singles sweep with a 10-8 victory over Hannah Folkerts in a match tiebreak.

In closely-contested doubles play, Columbus’ McManus and Roche, and Anna Sinnott and Grace Sullivan each won 10-8. Waverly-Shell Rock’s lone victory came from Olivia Phillips and Katie Wichman, 10-8, in the No. 3 doubles match.

In the boys’ dual, W-SR received straight-set singles wins from Luke Willis, Adam Ernsting, Ryan Willis, Thomas Kenealy, Trey Angel and Adam Ramker. Columbus’ Daniel Buchanan and Cole Weber pushed returning state doubles placewinners Luke and Ryan Willis to a match tiebreak before losing 10-3.

Regan Davis and Brianna Poll teamed up at No. 3 doubles for the West girls’ lone victory over Senior.

Columbus tops Glad-brook-Reinbeck, 11-3

In addition to her success on the tennis court, Fain scored six goals to lead Columbus past Gladbrook-Reinbeck during the Sailors’ soccer season opener.

Kiki Cabrera led Columbus with five assists. Sydney Shannon scored three times for the Sailors. Ciara Gallen and Cabrera also finished with goals.
