PERRY — Waverly-Shell Rock went on the road and gave Class 4A’s No. 10 Perry all it could handle before falling, 4-3, in eight innings during a Region 3 semifinal Saturday night.
The two teams entered the extra inning tied, 1-1. Waverly-Shell Rock’s Hanna Fanter gave her team the early lead on a RBI double that scored Kelsey Young in the bottom of the sixth before Perry’s Adrianna Eastman leveled the contest with an inside-the-park home run.
Emma Olejniczak’s two-run single capped a three-run top half of the eighth inning for Perry. W-SR got two runs back on a home run by Fanter, but was unable to get any closer.
Waverly-Shell Rock finishes the season 23-18, while Perry advances to face Carlisle with a trip to the state tournament on the line.
Elsewhere in Class 4A, Des Moines Hoover plated seven runs in the second inning and secured a 12-2 five-inning mercy rule win over Waterloo East.
In Class 5A, Linn-Mar survived a tough test from Cedar Falls before prevailing, 5-2.
Cedar Falls cut an early deficit to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning before Linn-Mar marked a single tally in the top half of the fifth and sixth. Linn-Mar will face Urbandale in the regional final.
Waterloo West was also eliminated from postseason play with an 11-0 loss to Class 5A’s No. 3 Cedar Rapids Jefferson in the Region 5 semifinals. Jefferson will play Dubuque Hempstead for a trip to Fort Dodge.
