DUBUQUE — It was feast and famine for Waterloo East Tuesday night as the Trojans split a Mississippi Valley Conference softball doubleheader at Dubuque Wahlert.
East (8-23 overall, 5-17 MVC) pounded out 17 base hits and blasted the Golden Eagles 12-1 in the six-inning opener. However, Wahlert’s Anna Chapman shut the Trojans out on four hits with 14 strikeouts as the Eagles won game two, 2-0.
Seven East batters had multiple hits in the opener. Kaylee Hanks and Kenidi Adams were both 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs while Bri Netty, Josie Stocks, Jayden Bentley, Brooklyn Kiewiet and Leah Frost all had two hits each. Frost had a double, a homer and three RBIs and was also the winning pitcher while Bentley and Kiewiet drove in two runs each.
Netty had two of East’s four hits in the second game. Adams took a hard-luck pitching loss as she allowed just six hits and struck out eight.
CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE 9-14, WATERLOO WEST 0-1: Cedar Rapids Prairie unleashed a relentless offensive attack for a pair of lopsided Mississippi Valley Conference wins at Waterloo West.
The Hawks (24-9) had 14 hits in the opener, including home runs by Lauren Kuch and Taylor Holub while pitcher Natalie Halvorson limited the Wahawks (7-25) to one base hit.
Prairie kept it up in game two with 17 hits. Kuch homered twice and Haley McFarlane once for the Hawks.
WATERLOO COLUMBUS 10, HUDSON 5: Sixth-ranked Waterloo Columbus traded blows with Hudson early before pulling away from the Pirates for a 10-5 North Iowa Cedar League win Tuesday.
Both teams had early four-run innings, but the Sailors plated six runs from the fourth through sixth innings to win their 27th game against four losses. Hudson fell to 9-12.
Kate Shannon had a two-run double and a two-run triple, Sydney Schultz had a two-run homer and Kayla Sproul also homered for Columbus.
