Nathan Hoy

  • Cedar Falls
  • Senior
  • Track and field

Bothered by a nagging leg injury early in the season, Hoy recently had a couple strong practices and was eager to test himself at last week's Collinge Relays. The University of Colorado track and field recruit went out and clocked an eye-opening 400 hurdle time of 52.96 that leads the state and currently ranks third nationally among this year's high school athletes. "He really wanted to prove to himself that he was ready to go, and obviously when he stepped onto the track he did that on Thursday for us," Cedar Falls coach Dirk Homewood said. Hoy has added the 800-meter run to his repertoire this season and is a key member of his team's successful 4x800, 4x400, medley and shuttle hurdle relays.

Alen Sehic

  • Waterloo West
  • Senior
  • Soccer

Sehic has been a dynamic force for West's offense this season. The senior midfielder has recorded a team-high seven goals and four assists for a Wahawk squad that improved to 8-3 last week with wins over East and Class 2A's No. 5 Dubuque Wahlert. "He has really matured this season and has become a player we lean on to make big plays for us," West coach Michael Penning noted. "Alen is an important part of what we try to do offensively and defensively." Sehic has committed to play soccer at Hawkeye Community College.

Mackenzie Michael

  • Cedar Falls
  • Freshman
  • Track and field

Coach Kara Hulse says Michael has the ability to run any event from the 100 to the 3,000. The Cedar Falls freshman anchors sprint medley, 4x400 and 4x800 relays that have qualified for Drake with times that rank among the state's top 10. Michael has won multiple open 800 and 400 meter titles this season and was a member of Cedar Falls' fourth-place state cross country team finish last fall. "She's just one of those great athletes who is very humble and says, 'Hey coach, what do you need?'" Hulse said. "She goes out, runs and does her job for us."

Franny Roche

  • Columbus
  • Senior
  • Tennis

Roche teamed up with Taylor Hogan to capture the No. 1 doubles championship, and also won a No. 2 singles title at Saturday's Clinton Invitational. The Columbus senior is 11-0 in doubles and 9-1 in singles this season with championships in the Top Gun tournament, as well. "Franny has grown up a lot this year and has assumed the role of a senior leader," Columbus coach Dave Will said of his third-year letterwinner, who returned from last year's state championship team. "She is a tenacious fighter on the court and gives it her all." Roche also participates in cross country, basketball and student government.

Jasmine Dunn

  • Waterloo East
  • Junior
  • Track and field

After competing on East's state championship 4x100 relay last season, Dunn has been a new source of points for the Trojans in the longer sprints this spring. The junior honor roll student and team captain has run on East's Drake-qualifying 4x200 relay and anchors the sprint medley. She also ranks among Class 4A's better 400 hurdlers despite only competing twice in the event. "She's a really selfless person," East coach Richard Carter said. "Last year we tried her in the 800 and knew that she was really strong in it. We trained her in the long sprints this year. She's been a part of a lot of relays and this (400 hurdles) is an opportunity for her to make it to state in an individual event."

Joe Schneider

  • Cedar Falls
  • Junior
  • Tennis

Schneider is a third-year varsity contributor who has helped set the tone for a Cedar Falls team that graduated eight of its top nine players from a year ago. The junior tallied a pair of wins at No. 1 singles and doubles last weekend during dual victories over Prairie and Jefferson. Earlier this spring, Schneider rallied from down 9-5 and won six consecutive points in a match tiebreak for a meet-clinching win over Dubuque Hempstead. "He's such a team person," Cedar Falls coach Brian Suiter said. "He sets a good example and is always in team huddles really trying to get the guys to encourage each other. He's been a really strong leader." Schneider also competes in USTA tournaments and is an honor roll student active in choir and his local church youth group.
