DES MOINES — Former Denver girls’ soccer coach Barb Gielau was honored at this weekend’s state tournament with the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Golden Plaque of Distinction Award.
Gielau was a driving force in bringing soccer to the community of Denver. In addition to helping start the soccer programs, she was involved in the development of the Denver Sports Complex, which houses two soccer fields.
As a coach, she compiled a 147-69 record in 13 seasons, leading the Cyclones to a 2013 state tournament appearance and six trips to the regional finals. Gielau retired from coaching in 2016 but has continued to assist with the girls’ soccer program, which is now led by her daughters, Jackie and Emily.
The Golden Plaque of Distinction Award honors the Iowa coach who has demonstrated a successful career while making notable contributions toward school, community and the coaching profession.
