AMES — Sioux City scored in the second overtime to spoil a valiant effort by Waterloo Friday in the Midwest High School Hockey League tournament quarterfinals, 2-1.

The Metros brought a 25-2-1-0 record and the regular-season championship into the tournament, but the eighth-seeded Warriors (15-11-1-2) were just one flick of the wrist away from the upset.

Sioux City held a 17-4 edge in first period shots on net, but Waterloo goaltender Dawson Sturch turned them all away.

Drake Beller put the Metros on top midway through the second period. Tyler Starbeck tied it for Waterloo at the 7:07 mark of the third.

After a scoreless first overtime, Connor Sand got the Metros’ 46th shot on goal of the night past Sturch for the winner.

The loss ends the season for Waterloo while Sioux City advanced to face the Des Moines Capitals in Saturday’s semifinals. Mason City and the Des Moines Oak Leafs meet in the other semifinal.
