HUDSON — Hudson’s third-ranked football team waited 23 years to host a playoff game.

Friday night, the undefeated Pirates made the most of the opportunity with a 35-0 thrashing of Pekin in a Class A first-round contest.

“We had goals set at the beginning of the year and a lot of the guys said earning a home playoff game for the first time since 1994 was one of those goals,” said head coach Justin Brekke.

Hudson broke out a wildcat offense, and the dual back formation gave Pekin (8-2) problems early.

The Pirates took a 7-0 first-quarter lead on Alec Staebell’s seven-yard run and led 14-0 at half after Christian Seres scored. Meanwhile, Pekin suffered an unfortunate injury when top running back Monico Requena went down right before half and didn’t return.

“That injury affected them,” said Brekke. “But (Dwayne) Eckley runs hard, too, and we were prepared for both of them.”

Hudson added a 45-yard run by Staebell to pad its lead. He finished with 100 yards on 14 carries.

“The misdirection of the wildcat is kind of different,” said Staebell. “I like the offense because it makes the defense have to think more and gives them more to worry about.”

Seres scored twice in the final quarter from 19 and 25 yards out to cap a 202-yard rushing night. The Pirates finished with a 343-112 advantage in total offense, almost all of it coming on the ground.

“It’s the way we like it,” said Brekke.

Hudson advanced to host eighth-ranked Lynnville-Sully in next Friday’s quarterfinals.

“They’re well-balanced and well-coached,” said Brekke. “They’re one of the teams that have been on our radar all year.
