DUBUQUE — Waterloo West used its quickness in the open field to scoot past Dubuque Hempstead 33-7 Friday night in a non-district high school football game.
The Wahawks improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Mustangs fell to 1-1.
Two big defensive stands shifted the momentum in West’s favor early.
Hempstead worked its way down the field in the first quarter, but the Wahawks came up with an interception at the 2-yard line to stop the drive.
Later in the quarter, West quarterback Cade Dodd hit Marrio Wright with a quick slant, and Wright turned it into a 46-yard scoring play to put the Wahawks on top with 50 seconds left in the quarter.
Hempstead mounted another drive, but faced with fourth-and-2 inside the Wahawks’ 30, the Mustangs mishandled the snap and West took over.
Dodd then orchestrated a drive through the air that running back Kadin Paulus finished with a two-yard run for a 14-0 lead.
Dodd hit Kalen Burt for a 10-yard scoring pass following a Hempstead fumble deep in its own territory to hike the margin to 21-0 in the third, and Paulus added a 12-yard scoring run for a 27-0 cushion.
After the Mustangs answered with their only touchdown, Wright took another short pass from Dodd and zipped 68 yards for the final TD.
