CALMAR — Denver got its district schedule off to a winning start Friday with a hard-earned, 27-22 victory at South Winneshiek in a matchup of 2016 state championship contenders.

The Cyclones (2-1) built a 20-0 halftime lead, but needed a fourth-quarter touchdown run by Bo McMahon to thwart a comeback attempt by the Warriors (0-3).

Denver had 363 yards of offense on the night with Sam Joerger collecting 175 and two touchdowns on 26 rushing attempts.

WEST MARSHALL 34, APLINGTON-PARKERSBURG 28: West Marshall snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat Friday with an improbable 34-28 comeback over third-ranked Aplington-Parkersburg.

After stopping the Falcons (3-1) on the 1-yard line with the score 28-26, the Mustangs executed a 99-yard touchdown drive in 1:12 seconds, scoring the game-winning TD on a 17-yard pass with :20 remaining.

Aplington-Parkersburg quarterback Carter Cuvelier went 8 of 16 passing for 129 yards and two touchdowns to Braden Good, who had four catches for 89 yards. Sam Thorn added 149 yards on 34 rushes with a TD.

Aplington-Parkersburg (3-1, 0-1) hits the road next week for a showdown with Dike-New Hartford while West Marshall (3-1, 1-0) enters a bye week.

DIKE-NEW HARTFORD 47, SAYDEL 0: Dike-New Hartford bounced back from a pair of tough losses to rout Saydel Friday.

The Wolverines (2-2) overpowered the Eagles with 411 yards of total offense, including 353 rushing. Cade Fuller led the charge with 198 yards on 19 rushes and five touchdowns.

Defensively, Dike-New Hartford held Saydel to just 73 total yards.

HUDSON 62, COLFAX-MINGO 0: It was all Hudson Friday night as the Pirates blasted Colfax-Mingo.

Hudson (3-0) scored five times in the first quarter for a 34-0 lead. Cam Fulcher was the game’s leading rusher with 151 yards off 12 carries with three touchdowns while Christian Seres added 143 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Jacob Murray completed six of his eight passes for 117 yards and two scores — both to Al Hageman.

GLADBROOK-REINBECK 42, NORTH TAMA 0: Second-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck was too much for North Tama as the Rebels improved to 3-0 with a shutout win.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck got a big night throwing and running from quarterback Hunter Lott, who had 241 rushing yards on 16 carries and connected on 9 of 15 passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns. Josh Peterson added 129 yards on 16 carries.

The Rebels put together 586 total yards offensively.

NEW HAMPTON 28, FOREST CITY 14: Braydon Fisher and Keagan John rushed for a combined 278 yards as New Hampton topped Forest City.

Fisher had 30 carries for 144 yards and one touchdown, while John averaged 7.4 yards on 18 carries (134 yards) with two scoring runs.

New Hampton (2-1) had 355 yards total offense to only 147 for the Indians (0-3).

CRESTWOOD 35, HAMPTON-DUMONT 28: Crestwood broke into the win column in its district opener, breaking a tie game with Clayton Ollendieck’s five-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Chris Guest of Crestwood was the game’s leading rusher with 127 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.

DECORAH 55, VINTON-SHELLSBURG 0: Decorah race past winless Vinton-Shellsburg to improve to 3-0.

The Vikings amassed 314 rushing yards with 111 from Jake Muhlbauer, who ran 11 times and scored twice.

ST. ANSGAR 35, NASHUA-PLAINFIELD 32: Five successful PAT kicks by Jack Mendoza were the difference in St. Ansgar’s three-point win over Nashua-Plainfield.

The seventh-rated Saints (3-0) got 152 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries by Dayton Smith while Collin Kramer gained 119 on eight rushes and added three touchdowns.

The Huskies were led by Dayton Hansen who completed 19 of 27 passes with one interception for 224 yards and four touchdowns. Levi Enright caught 12 of Hansen’s passes for 141 yards and two scores.

GRUNDY CENTER 49, ROCKFORD 0: Caleb Kuiper rushed for 218 yards and was one of seven Grundy Center players to score a touchdown as the Spartans ripped Rockford (0-3) in a Class A, District 3 opener.

Grundy Center ()2-1) piled up 584 yards and 26 first downs on offense while the defense had four interceptions, six tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks.

DON BOSCO 66, DUNKERTON 24: Top-ranked Don Bosco got its offensive machine rolling again Friday for a 66-24 win over Dunkerton.

The Dons (3-0) bolted to a 22-0 first-quarter lead. Dunkerton closed within 28-12 by halftime, but Don Bosco outscored the Raiders 38-12 over the final two quarters.

Dons quarterback Wyatt Sawvel hit 6 of 13 passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those scoring strikes went to Cael Tenold, who finished with three catches for 88 yards. Thomas Even also caught a TD pass of 48 yards, ran 10 times for 154 yards and two scores and finished with 10 tackles on defense. Austin Svoboda rushed for 124 yards on 19 carries with one touchdown.

For Dunkerton (1-2), Dawson Burch three three touchdown passes — a pair to Brady Stone covering 66 and 54 yards, respectively, and a 61-yarder to Kaleb Westendorf.

JANESVILLE 29, NORTHWOOD-KENSETT 8: Janesville’s defense intercepted a pair of passes and surrendered just one second-quarter touchdown as the Wildcats improved to 2-1 with a 29-8 win at Northwood-Kensett.

Dawson Charley led Janesville’s defense with 24 tackles, including seven solos. Offensively, quarterback Peyton Meyer hit 5 of 13 passes for 153 yards and three touchdowns — all to Spencer Hoff covering 47, 62 and 23 yards.

RICEVILLE 36, AGWSR 10: Riceville reeled off 36 unanswered points in the second half to pull off an upset at 10th-ranked AGWSR.

AGWSR (2-1) jumped out to a 10-0 halftime lead, but the Wildcats’ Jon Miller rattled off three touchdown runs as a part of his 28-carry 157-yard night to turn the game in Riceville’s favor. The Wildcats improved to 2-1.
