AMES — Ames scored twice in each half as the Cyclones topped Cedar Falls Monday in a Class 3A regional final, 4-1.

Grace Nelson and Catherine Merchant each scored in the first half for Ames (14-3), while Hartley Christensen and Lucy Weninger found the back of the net in the scond half.

Cedar Falls’ lone goal was by senior Kaitlyn Soleberg with 30 seconds left in the game.

The Tigers close out their 2017 campaign, 10-9.


HUDSON 20, COLUMBUS 15: Sixteen walks doomed the Sailors as Columbus dropped a a high-scoring decision to the Pirates Tuesday at Sulentic Field.

The Pirates (6-5) scored in every inning but the second, and scored three or more runs in four innings.

Alex Hageman led the Hudson attack with a four-for-five effort that included a double and four runs scored.

The night was supposed to be a double header, but the second game was suspended in the top of the first with the Pirates leading 8-0. That game will be resumed as part of a doubleheader at Hudson on June 22.
