CEDAR FALLS — Grinding away within a sport that takes plenty of discipline, Clint Boevers wrote his own script on senior night. His breakthrough pin highlighted Cedar Falls’ overwhelming wrestling victory over metro rival Waterloo West.

Surrendering just one bout, the Tigers were dominant on their home mat Thursday night, 61-3.

It was a memorable evening for Boevers as he rallied for a pin at 220 pounds against Jevarius Burris after trailing 5-2 going into the final period.

“This just feels so great,” Boevers said, following his first victory of the year. “I started out as a freshman on this very mat and was so scared. I lost that night, and to come out here tonight, on senior night and win, it’s just great. Everything I have went through led up to this point right here.”

It wasn’t easy at first for Boevers as he struggled to get distance between himself and Burris.

Burris was on top, 5-2, and looking to turn Boevers for a pin. Suddenly, the roles flipped. Boevers got the reversal, and seconds later, the pin at 4 minutes, 27 seconds, bringing the Tiger faithful to a standing roar.

“I never research my opponent and I really don’t care if he has won one match or 100,” Boevers said. “I just go out to wrestle and try not to let my opponent get into my head. To tell the truth, I was struggling there for awhile but I was not going to give up.”

Boevers’ win kept the Tigers on a roll during a dominant team performance.

“After it was all over I was actually surprised that we even lost once,” Cedar Falls coach Michael Kelly said. “I think our guys wanted to make a statement, and tonight they did. We wrestled hard and we battled at every weight. I think we could have actually been a little better as we showed to be a little rusty at points.

“I thought it was pretty awesome for Clint to get his first win this year, especially on senior night. He goes out there every time no questions asked, and wrestles hard. He is a good kid that gives his all, and when I asked him how that felt he just grinned from ear-to-ear. Great story.”

Cedar Falls claimed six pins, Anthony Chittello (132), Christian Simpson (138), Tanner Doyle (160), Dakota Southworth (170), Justin Campbell (285) with one forfeit.

Waterloo West senior Richardson Gbeynie picked up a decision, 6-4, over Hunter Secor for the Wahawks’ lone victory.

“I don’t know what happened tonight, I just don’t know,” West coach Alex Dolly said. “The chips just didn’t fall our way and Cedar Falls went out there and believed that they could beat Waterloo West, and they did. We need to start believing we can win. We have some guys that believe that, but we need every one to believe. Like Kaden Karns. He believes.”

Karns was matched up against Class 3A’s No. 3 Jakey Penrith.

Penrith built a 5-0 edge going into the final two minutes and that is when Karns came to life. Karns put Penrith to the mat for two points, but couldn’t turn his as he lost a tight 5-2 battle.
