CEDAR FALLS — Waverly-Shell Rock captured the Cedar Falls Early Bird girls’ tennis Invitational Saturday with a perfect 3-0 mark.
The Go-Hawks topped Western Dubuque (8-1) and Dike-New Hartford (9-0) and were pushed to the finish by the host Tigers in a 5-4 victory.
WSR won four of the six singles flights — Madi Overmann, Ashlyn Hughes, Morgan Chandler and Olivia Phillips, while Phillips combined with Katie Wichman to win at No. 3 doubles.
Cedar Falls narrowly dropped its match with WSR as it lost a pair of set tie-breakers at No. 2 doubles and No. 5 singles. However, the Tigers saw freshman Krisha Keeran win at No. 1 singles and Meghan Saak at No. 2 singles. Keeran’s win included a victory over WSR’s Chelsea Poesch, who finished third in 2A singles last year.
Keeran and Saak combined to win No. 1 doubles for the Tigers, while teammates Payton Wageman and Jamie Knox won at No. 2 doubles.
