TRAER — North Tama backed up solid pitching with timely hitting Saturday to defeat Waterloo Columbus 4-0 in the championship game of the Redhawks’ tournament.
Henry Hulme held Columbus to two base hits and North Tama (15-5) plated a single run in the third inning, two in the fifth and one in the sixth for all the support he needed.
Parker Westhoff had two hits, including a double for Columbus.
Columbus reached the title game with a 16-5 victory over BCLUW.
Lucas Benda doubled twice while Robert Porth, Tristan Wright and Andrew Luke also had two hits each for the Sailors, who erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning to blow the game open. Back-to-back doubles by Benda and Kaleb Boleyn ignited that rally. Columbus racked up 14 base hits in the game.
JACK NORTH INVITATIONAL: Waterloo East took on a pair of highly regarded opponents and absorbed a pair of defeats Saturday at the Jack North Invitational in Des Moines.
Iowa City Regina, ranked seventh in Class 2A, broke open a tight game with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on the way to a 9-2 win. Sarah Lehman homered and drove in four runs.
Kaylee Hanks had two of East’s three hits.
The Trojans (7-19) met Class 5A’s No. 1-ranked Waukee in their second game and fell 10-0. East’s bats were quiet again with just four hits while Waukee had 10, including three doubles and a triple.
Waukee (21-1) hasn’t lost since a 6-4 setback to West Des Moines Valley in the third game of season.
Waterloo West dropped a 5-0 decision to Highland of Riverside. The Wahawks had just two hits against a pair of pitchers, and Highland (12-2) scored twice in both the first and second innings.
