WATERLOO — Cedar Falls posted a school-record score Monday as the Tigers rolled into the Class 5A girls’ state golf tournament with a regional title at Irv Warren Golf Course.
Cedar Falls finished at 312, which was 53 strokes better than runner-up Linn-Mar, which also advances to state.
In the individual competition, Tiger Taylor Sernett was the medalist. She finished regulation play tied with Mason City’s Sydney Eaton at 74, then won a tiebreaker for the title. Cedar Falls’ Hannah Bermel was third at 75 and her twin sister Hailey Bermel was fifth at 79. Mackenzie Roberts rounded out the Tigers’ team score with an 84.
Waterloo West finished eighth in the team standings and was led by Hanna Zikuda’s round of 89, which was good for ninth in the individual standings.
The Class 5A state tournament is May 30-31 at Coldwater Links in Ames.
COLUMBUS 5, MOUNT VERNON 0: Waterloo Columbus earned its 23rd consecutive trip to the girls’ state team tennis tournament with a 5-0 shutout of Mount Vernon in Class 1A regional action Monday.
Olivia Fain, Lauren McManus, Taylor Hogan, Karlee Sinnott and Brianne Eighme won their singles matches for the Sailors and Frannie Roche was on her way to victory when the team win was clinched.
Mount Vernon lost for just the second time this season.
Columbus will play Pella Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the opening round of state.
WATERLOO COLUMBUS 10, NEW HAMPTON 0: Kayla Sproul had four RBIs and pitched a three-hit shutout as the Sailors opened their season with a blowout win.
Sproul kick-started a five-run second inning with a two-run double. She finished with three strikeouts in the pitching circle.
WATERLOO WEST 10, WATERLOO EAST 0: Adin Turanovic had a hat trick as 16th-ranked Waterloo West disposed of metro rival Waterloo East in their Class 3A boys’ soccer substate opener.
Alen Sehic and Sadmir Coralic added two goals each for West, which will face Cedar Rapids Washington on Wednesday.
COLUMBUS 10, VINTON-SHELLSBURG 0: Jacob Schons scored three first-half goals and added two assists to lead Waterloo Columbus to a resounding Class 1A substate win.
Next up for Columbus is a Wednesday matchup with 11-6 Postville, which beat Monticello 11-1 Monday.
CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER 5, COLUMBUS 0: Cedar Rapids Xavier made short work of Waterloo Columbus in boys’ Class 1A substate team tennis action Monday, winning five straight-set matches.
