WATERLOO — The Waterloo West girls’ basketball team is feeling good.

With the postseason rapidly approaching, the Wahawks won their second straight game Tuesday night, turning back Dubuque Senior 61-46.

“This was a good win for us tonight,” West coach Tony Pappas said. “We got up big a few times, but they kept coming back. They played us hard but our girls responded well and made good plays when needed.”

The Wahawks (4-8, 11-10) built an early 9-1 lead, then fought off several Rams rallies to preserve the victory.

Senior’s first attempt to grab the lead came late in the first quarter when it closed within 9-8. West junior Na’Tracia Ceaser responded with a long-range 3-pointer to start a 13-0 run, and the Wahawks went on to lead 27-17 at halftime.

“We wanted to come in here tonight and push the ball hard and run the floor,” Ceaser said. “We worked for less turnovers and everybody played well to what we wanted to do. Plus it was senior night and we wanted to win it for them.”

The Wahawks never let up in the third quarter as they played relentless defense and stayed solid from the offensive end. Ceaser knocked down eight of her game high 25 points in the third.

“They played us pretty hard,” Ceaser said. “We really didn’t want it to be close, so when we started to get it going we kept pushing it and that was good. It was a very good win for us.”

The Rams eventually ran out of gas due to the constant pressure by West.

“We hit free throws when we needed (17-for-24) and kept making good plays,” said Pappas. “We are playing good now and we need to be playing our best to finish the rest of our games. They are all going to be tough ones.

“Like I said, we feel good about 11 wins and where we are right now.”

In addition to Ceaser’s big night, the Wahawks received 14 points from junior Jada Draine.

“We are playing well now but still have a lot of work to do,” said Ceaser. “If you compare us to the way we started the year up to now, we have made a very big jump.”
