WATERLOO — Waterloo Christian opened its girls’ basketball season with a buzzer-beater Monday night.

Unfortunately, the Regents didn’t make enough baskets the rest of the game as they fell to Lisbon, 57-17.

Still, Ashlyn Walston’s 3-pointer as time expired provided a memorable highlight for a Waterloo Christian team that will be a work in progress early this season.

“That was one of those, ‘Oh no, oh no, oh yes’ shots,” said Waterloo Christian head coach Carmen Wipf. “She’s not normally someone we have taking 3s, but we encourage our girls to take shots when they’re open and I’m proud of her for taking that shot.”

The Regents struggled to figure out the Lions’ zone defense early and Lisbon got its post-up game going in the second quarter to widen its lead.

“Defensively we’ve got some things we need to work on, especially fronting the low post,” said Wipf.

From the other side, Waterloo Christian got a team-leading nine points from Emma Armbrecht, who played at Valley Lutheran last season.

“She’s a nice gift from Valley Lutheran,” said Wipf of the senior. “We want to open and free her up on offense, but we’ve got to get used to playing with each other first.”

Thanks to Walston’s big finish, the Regents left the court with plenty of enthusiasm.

“They’re passionate about basketball. We just need need to get to know each other on the floor,” said Wipf. “We only had about eight girls last year. Now, we have around 14 and it’s just going to take time to figure out what works with all the new faces.”
