A variety of leaders emerged, taking on larger roles throughout metro basketball scene this past season.

Plenty of progress can be found within players named to the 2016-17 All-Metro boys’ basketball teams as selected by the coaches of Cedar Falls, Columbus, East, Waterloo Christian and West.

Cedar Falls junior A.J. Green is the lone repeat first-team selection. His teammate, Isaiah Johnson, along with East’s Tyrese Nickelson and West’s duo of Carondis Harris-Anderson and Carlton Todd took major steps forward to round out the first team.

Following the graduation of all-state teammate Tra’von Fagan, Green became Cedar Falls’ primary scorer, averaging 21.5 points on 47.4 percent shooting that included three 3-pointers per game at a 43.4 percent success rate.

Johnson, a second team selection from a year ago, embraced his role as the leading defender for a Cedar Falls team that finished 16-8. He averaged a team-best 6.2 rebounds and three steals a game to go with an efficient 10.8 points on 50 percent shooting.

Harris-Anderson, Todd and Nickelson each earned first team honors as first-time All-Metro selections.

Harris-Anderson was a game-changer for West on both ends of the court as led the Wahawks with averages 18.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists. Todd, in his first season at West, finished with just one fewer rebound that Harris-Anderson and complemented him with 14.7 points per game and a team-high 2.2 steals per game.

Nickelson’s debut at East was also impressive as he averaged 24.8 points and 3.3 3-pointers per game while shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 41.8 percent from distance. The sophomore is a well-rounded player with averages of 4.4 rebounds, two assists and 2.2 steals.

A veteran second team includes East’s repeat selections in junior Ja’Cee Clark and senior Raheem Nickelson. Waterloo Columbus senior Teion Sales led a Sailors team that tripled its win total in points (14.7), assists (5.8) and steals (1.77), while also hauling in 4.6 rebounds with a 5-foot-8 frame. West senior multi-sport athlete Devon Moore and Cedar Falls junior forward Ben Gerdes joined Sales as first-time second team All-Metro selections.
